Once the board of review had officially decided on a prisoner’s release, the former Buchenwald prisoner would receive a temporary ID. This confirmed the prisoner’s entire duration of imprisonment – including time spent in other camps – as well as their release from Buchenwald. In the case of Hubert Weiss, more than six weeks passed between the liberation on May 5, 1945, and the time his ID was issued on June 23, 1945. Very few of these IDs have been preserved in the Arolsen Archives because they were given directly to the liberated prisoners.
